Meet the Mac (again)

So hes back again! You better hide your girlfriends Its David Mcintosh aka Tornado from Gladiators, we teamed up once more to up the tempo, give him a new vibe, a little more dirty and uncouth, less clean, he is a marine after all. Recently I have been trying to make things look more raw, but still natural and not too posed, its actually harder than you think unless you work with models who live and breathe to pose.

I also worked with this guy back some time ago in 2008, when I got my first full-page feature printed in The Daily Star, as a photographer and as a writer! Ahhh yes, multi-talented here and I got the diploma to prove it! Still quite proud of my 2.1 considering everything else I juggled at the time.

It followed up with lots of positive comments and feedback, that made TDS readers hungry for more… well he was butt naked, with only a few rounds of ammunition to cover his pride, I was quite controversial back then...

So of course I gave them more…

Thanks to Michael Booker (editor at The Daily Star), for giving me that chance to push my work out there as a writer first and as a photographer. Huge thanks to David also, I actually found and contacted Mr. Mcintosh on myspace.com way before he got the gladiators job, from when I saw him I knew he was going to be big, so its funny how things work out, God is good my friends, trust your vision and always have faith in your path, the truth of ‘religion’ will never let you down x

It’s the local fame game

I have received a lot of positive feedback about this image, most of which mentioning that ‘she looks so different’ and in actual fact “she looks better here than she does on the show”, well I cant say much on that people, but I think with a glam-squad like Joy Adenuga (make up artist), Kasia Fortuna (hair) and Syreeta McQueen (stylist and trustee), its hard to go wrong really! Fashion in illustration - Terrence Brown

Illustration within fashion has inspired me for the longest time now, going to fashion week and glancing at sketches, paintings merged with fashion photography, its all highly commendable stuff that I see very rarely, only on the odd editorial for Italian Vogue maybe, but normally it requires a skill that only the best will incorporate into their work; Steven Meisel, Nick Knight, Patrick Demarchelier, Thierry Le Goues… living legends! Here we have the artwork from Terrence Brown, a very highly skilled sketcher indeed, I have touched on his creations before, but I do love his approach to fashion with pencil.

There is something very graceful, elegant and majestic about Terrence’s work, he knows how to bring women alive, how to make them unique and daringly bold.

Simply prestige Terrence, I look forward to our next collaboration.

Naughty boy - Igor Stepanov (Select model management)

Okay, so first things first, this boy turns up at my studio and says “I expected you to be older…”, URM? How very dare you lol, not all photographers are old and grey thank you, the name Arron Dunworth does sound a little sophisticated though doesn’t it? I like it!

Relaxed much Igor? I think a bonus to my age is working with younger models, I don’t mess about with my words, I just tell them what to do and they get on with it, its not the fact of Igor attempting to lick out my camera lens that makes me say this, but you can just tell when a model is comfortable, their body language, their eyes… I mean Igor is a cheeky boy anyway, but sometimes that same cockiness wont always come out so naturally if for say, an older photographer was shooting Igor, connection is important.

We meet again Omari! I find that a lot of models travel in different packs, its actually quite intriguing… but Omari was tagging along with Igor that day, so I thought why not? Let me just shoot off a couple of frames…

Some of you may remember Omari if you go back to my earlier blogs, he was a new face to the modelling game when I first shot him, so I recommended to his uncle Neal Mcleod that he sign with Select… lo and behold its now a done deal, just recently featuring in a full fashion editorial for HERO magazine and off to New York soon, *sighs*.

I’ve seen a lot of faces, but this was one I had to get for the book, again its something that I cant really describe, the light brown hair, the blue eyes, the blonde goatee, his slightly albino-like quality, what can I say? Mixed ethnicities is my thing! Some people like leopard print, others like zebra, I like a bit of both at the same time, hmmm, now there’s one for you to think about.

Simple styling and photography by me, I keep thinking if I should start learning more about styling and/or male grooming, hmmm, perhaps.

When all the talented people come out to play and what a night it was, there was so many people showing me love, networking with top industry professionals and seeing familiar faces, I don’t go out much anymore, too busy writing blogs as you can probably see *actually laughing out loud*, gosh how sad… lol, but anyways! It was a pleasure and an honour to accompany Dionne Smith and Bianca Laurent that night, I got an access all areas pass, so I rolled through everywhere including the red carpet.

It was a very beautiful thing to be surrounded by so many creative people, genuine and pure, DJ Sarah Jane, Akala, Billy and Kym from Eastenders, Adam Deacon, Jimmy Akingbola and Nate James even commented on my blazer, oh happy days! Lol, congratulations to everyone who won an award that evening, keep striving for more, don’t give up the dream x

He’s a real “TOPBOY” - Ashley Walters

And I don’t just mean in the C4 series, me and Ashley Walters also worked together way before “TOPBOY” came about. Shawn Emmanuel had got me on board to take Ashley’s new press shots a few years back, styled by Chris Benns and make up by Gina Blondell, our boy Ash looks pretty slick here.

It’s a shame these pictures wasn’t used on his new website considering… but I digress, I know Ashley liked the shots, especially the graffiti backdrop, thanks Batlow!

Forget “TOPBOY”, these are the TOP GIRLS

I was called in by Neesha Sharma and Dacre from RWD magazine to shoot the leading ladies from C4’s
“TOPBOY” drama, we quickly assembled our girls in position to get shot up by yours truly, it was a bit of a quickie, so I needed to shoot fast! No pun intended, big pun, small pun, funny pun, I swear!

It’s a small world after all and everyone knows everyone, so obviously I was going to know at least one of these lovely ladies, Camilla Beeput (to the far left) and I had worked together absolutely years ago! Forgive me if I’m mistaken, but I think we actually shot around 6 years ago? Shit! Its times like this I release how long I’ve been doing this, I remember inviting her into my 6th form college as she needed new headshots taken, at the time she was starring in “Daddy Cool” at Shaftesbury Avenue, it followed the whole Javine and Harvey mishap, yikes.

New African Fashion Book Launch - Helen Jennings

The crowning book launch by Helen Jennings from Arise magazine was very endearing to say the least, its great to have a book of such substance that really describes how inspirational African fashion can be, especially coming from one of the world’s leading black fashion magazines right now. Equally impressed by the book was stylist Lauraine Bailey, who accompanied me that evening to Soho Gallery, although to our surprise we did not expect to be seeing ourselves on BBC newsround the following evening lol, granted I was wearing a design by my favourite African menswear designer - Mr. Andrew McCormack, EVERYONE ALWAYS compliments on his designs, their exclusive guys, sorry! Watch out for me at 00:34 having a not so private discussion with Ms. Bailey lol

I met Helen Jennings for the first time when we both went out to Gambia in 2009, a very noble and humble lady, working alongside Shola for TMC and Afua Adom from Pride, you can see the video footage and pictures from one of my earlier blogs. I take my hat off to you Helen, an adoring contribution to African heritage, thank you very much for my signed copy x

Beauty of the Gele

I love a good Gele, don’t you Regina? Recently published in New African Woman Magazine, this story most certainly suit’s the title. For the longest time I wanted to do a story based on head wraps, and who better to model it for me other than Rachael Naome, a model I had worked with in Gambia back in 2009… being of East African descent, she geld into the story admirably.

Styled by Lauraine Bailey, these wraps were no walk in the park, we got ourselves into quite a twist, but the effort shows, they look as wonderful as I could have imagined. Kudos to Nicola Hamilton for the make up, the tinted eye brow was a good look. I will probably work with more wraps in the future, for some reason I find myself fascinated by them, these large structured pieces on the top of peoples heads, how absurd, but yet also alluring.

Jake Hold (Elite models)

Its my ginger haired friend again, he is a bit of a looker isn’t he? After testing with him the first time I was convinced I wanted to work with him again and cant wait to see him book some big campaigns soon.

Some models, actually no, A LOT of models really don’t apply themselves when shooting, but I saw this guys effort to encompass my vision and he was spot on, thanks Jake, even though we had to make special arrangements for you lol, both myself and Denise Brown were happy to get you in our books, plus submitting some of the best images to fantasticsmag.

I’m not done yet, Angela Plummer graces Pride

If shooting for Labrinth and putting together a beauty shoot for the same issue of Pride wasn’t enough! I also photographed some pages for the hair trends section, featuring model Mariam from D1, styled by Lauraine Bailey, make up by Valerie Saint Amand and hair by the queen of braids - Angela Plummer of course.

We finished up just in time to get the last train home! We were all so tired and went well into the evening, but like the professionals we are, we worked through the night and now have a beautiful braided collection to show for it.

Also featuring in the same issue of Pride magazine I photographed and styled my very first beauty shoot, using the VERY colourful collection from my girl Tatum at Funkybling and one of my old school muses Jade Chanel Pereira, a concept by make up artist Lauren Baker, we definitely brought this one to life, using colourful wigs, astonishing jewellery and zebra patterned lips! Inspiration: Nicki Minaj and Rihanna.

At first we knew this shoot would be different for Pride, but we wanted to push the boundaries on it and look what happened, Shevelle (the creative director at Pride) loved it! We took a risk and pulled it off, or maybe it was just the good photography and make up that sold it? COCKYMUCH? No, I just speak the truth darlings *angel face*, thanks to my angelic assistant Kendra Lee Smith also, life saver x

I predict a feature for Pride Magazine - Labrinth

Another inspiring feature me and Afua put together, this time we were off to “The Chocolate Factory” - a comfy little studio space in North London, where Labrinth produces all of his finest work. We also got a sneak peak of Labrinth’s new Earthquake video before it officially released, thanks Lab.

I asked Labrinth to do some pretty random stuff, like playing his guitar outside, messing around with a Rubik’s cube, but he was super cool about everything, another fine addition to the Afua and Arron works, speaking of which, a huge congratulations is in order for Mrs. Adom, giving birth to a beautiful baby girl.

Stronger and stronger, me and Denise Brown are cranking things up a notch, also featured for Flavour Magazines ‘HOT’ issue we pulled together a great lingerie shoot with Magda from Storm Models, the bottom left is my favourite, love the body language and symmetry, CLASSIQUE.

Absolutely flawless, gotta give it up for Tatum Mazzilli, designer of Funkbling at Year Zero, her new spread in Japanese Vogue is the truth, believe me, supermodels rocking out a high fashion editorial in Versace and Funkybling, with pink and green hair looking like manga warriors! I wouldn’t expect nothing less, Google Japanese Vogue and Funkybling now!

Me and Tatum have worked together for a while now and her new collection is looking better than ever, I love shooting her look-books, if I’m going to shoot stills of anything, it has to be her range of dazzling bling and neon cuffs, our model shoot will soon come, so watch this space.

Oh Marlon!

My good friend Marlon Mckenzie did it again (no Britney, sit down!), he went up for X-Factor and didn’t get it, but I respect this guys determination, I always have, I just really wish he would go and grab his music career by both hands for himself, while not relying on things like X-Factor, he is talented, but just very unlucky. Still taking it in his stride, you can see he is still as silly as ever lol…

Last time I worked with Marlon it was all a little too serious, we mellowed it down this time and had some fun, free your body, free your mind, free your soul!

Hope to see you again soon Marlon, don’t leave it too long before you come back to London, I heard your nude shoot is coming out soon for you know who and where, say no more, my lips are sealed.

Cher Lloyd - Lets make it ‘HOT’

Teaming up with Flavour magazine again they asked me to work on a shoot for their cover star Cher Lloyd, keeping it bright and youthful I decided to use some cool props with great styling by Gemma Swan and Neesha Sharma, thanks ladies. Check Funkybling on the cover, “REBEL” is the word!

Hair by Dionne Smith and make up by Katrina Appie, we all made a great team and finished up in time so Cher could rush off to her next appointment, being backed by SYCO I know she will go far, I‘m curious to see where the future takes her.

Big thanks to Annika and Leonard at Flavour magazine for the video and pizza! Cher was very easy to work with, I gave instructions and she followed like a pro, no questions asked, that’s what I’m talking about, *hi5* - watch the video, you’ll see. Shola Branson and David Valensi (AMCK models)

On my return from Paris I had promised Patrick from AMCK models I would work with two of his boys, one by the name of David Valensi, who I had actually been introduced to a year before in Soho by a mutual friend, but we never exchanged numbers! He wasn’t modelling at the time, but here he is a year later working it out.

Model agent Patrick from AMCK also got me to work with a guy called Shola Branson, mentioning how he thought Shola would suit my style given that he knew I found Rob Evans, it was obvious to Patrick that my more personal work is a reflection of myself as an artist, being of ‘mixed raced’ ethnicity and the bond I share with models alike.

Oui-oui, Paris!!

Disney land oh disney land! There were many other highlights to this trip, I needed this holiday to get away with special company, chill out and re-energise. Obviously I took some snaps of different things that inspired me…

MEDIC! Akingbola

I love watching Holby City! So this was a very interesting job, much love to Afua from Pride Magazine, very appreciated! We journeyed out on another adventure to the BBC studios where they film both Holby City and Eastenders, we got to meet some of the cast and take a tour around the premises, its incredible how they built a whole hospital based around one programme and then a WHOLE square for Eastenders.

Award winning actor Jimmy Akingbola was our tour guide and a great one at that, we got to know the ins and outs of the whole facility, make up, prosthetics, wardrobe, sets, scripts! Check me getting my behind the scenes on, love these little outings Afua! x

Boss Man - Frank Warren

This must have been the longest journey EVER! Lol, anyone heard of Chestnut Rail? No, me neither lol, but to be honest it was an honour to shoot such a boxing legend such as Frank Warren, he has been behind some of the biggest British boxers ever, such as Prince Naseem, Nigel Benn, Ricky Hatton and Amir Khan.

The editor at Boxing News let me use my own initiative once again, thank you Paul Wheeler! I just took some simple shots of Frank with his sons, all in a days work. I want to start shooting more health and fitness work, especially sports, as it may be something I explore a little deeper next year, with Europe’s biggest sports hall being built literally across the road from where I live! Hmmm, to be continued…

Blazing Glory

Anyway! From one Black Beauty to another, myself, Dionne Smith, Charlene, Bianca and Veowna from DeChars all collaborated on another colourful spread for Black Beauty magazine.

It was a nice little submission that we really hoped would make cover, we didn’t quite get it, but oh well, we love to keep things moving. Thanks to Joy Adenuga for the wonderful make up, the styling was all around very nice, a good team effort!

O’Shaughnessy Vs Ri-Ri

Another one of my former muses from years ago! I am so glad to see so many positive things happening for this guy, he deserves every bit of it, he is so humble and grounded, but yet everywhere I go all I hear is “Dudley, Dudley, I wanna use Dudley!” lol, I have been around this guy since the days when his hair was black and always seen the potential, to think all it took was a simple bit of bleach and hey presto! We have a supermodel in the building ladies and gentleman, now the whole world wants to know, but shout-out to Dudley for keeping it real! Massive thank you for modelling in this story we shot for Fantasticsmag.

I had a lot of positive feedback about this story, creative direction by myself, but styled once again by the sensational Katie Mcdowall and make up by Rashida Blair, we had fun that day.

Rihanna I salute you, you couldn’t have picked a better guy, Dudley’s acting was immaculate, no doubt Melina Matsoukas directed it? Absolutely amazing, all the controversial messages symbolising her relationship with Chris Brown… I remember meeting them both just before the incident and taking some pictures at a Choice FM event years ago! Without getting into too much detail, it was obvious they loved each other dearly, but clearly had problems. I remember a highly popular newspaper at the time offering me some money if I could get a snap of them both ‘together,’ it was one thing taking pictures of them apart, but together? Seriously?! That reporter must have been D.U.M.B with the entourage Chris and Ri-Ri had, after Rihanna’s security would have pounded my camera into the ground! It’s a shame what happened to those two, it must be hard being such a young and talented couple, so much pressure…

For the record though, Chris Brown was NOT KIND to me that evening lol, AT ALL. Rihanna was stunning, I never realised how tall she was, I can understand why she has been the face of Gucci and Emporio Armani. She was a lot nicer than Chris, she gave me a little wink and then we had a stare down haha, jealous much Chris? Lol, ohh! Maybe she did it to make him jealous, who knows??

It runs in the family - Harry

Coincidently Edmond’s brother Harry Uzoka has also been working as a model for some time now, signed to M&P models, being featured predominantly in Arena Homme + and i-D magazine.

Not quite as ‘hard’ as his brother Edmond, but still a handsome guy, at least enough for Leomie Anderson from Premier Model Management anyway… they do make a wonderful couple, Google Leomie now, you will see what I mean. Some of you may remember Leomie from “The Model Agency”, she’s a stunner and a very kind soul at that, we recently had twitter ramblings about Harry’s feet haha! No comment.

Flavour Magazine - Chibogz and Kyle

In one of my first full fashion shoots with Denise Brown, we recruited one of my former muses Edmond Chibogu (black and blue) and Kyle Luis Forde (yellow) from D1 Model Management, at the time Kyle had just recently worked on Calvin Klein’s new campaign with the likes of Cassie, Lara Stone and my own discovery Rob Evans.

Denise really wanted to work on colour blocking, so we took it to the streets of New Cross Gate to shoot the story in natural light. It’s slightly uncanny how much Kyle looks like MJ from his earlier days huh? Thanks to Edmond as well for coming at such short notice. I have used Edmond as one of my muses for a long time now, his face is so menacing, cut to kill. Natural make up by Amie Williams.

Junior Green (Best Afro Hairdresser 2011)

Congratulations Junior Green for winning best afro hair dresser of the year award - 2011! I am happy to have contributed towards Junior’s win with our first set of pictures, taken with a lovely selection of models, styled using simple cuffs and neck pieces.

I was running stupidly late on my way to this shoot due to my stupid cab driver! But the thing is, even if I turn up an hour late, no matter what! I will still ALWAYS deliver the goods, and then some.

Great Britain! Do you care?

… A bit of a sad moment in little London town, the riots really hit hard! And there I was, right in the middle of it all in, Clapham Junction! On my way home from dinner with friends, me and my friend Jarel were listening to the radio and decided venture fourth into the calamity, it wasn’t until we were in the thick of it all that we realised how devastating the situation really was, the streets in shambles and people screaming from burning buildings… I had to take a few pictures to remember the moment. I knew crime was going to get worse in London, but I never expected this, not yet anyway.

If it wasn’t for all the terror and mayhem caused, the looting and unnecessary violence, maybe I could understand the rioting a bit more… I mean, if people thought the Government wasn’t listening, I’m sure they are now! But at the cost of innocent peoples lives and business? That’s a level way beyond ‘rioting’ isn’t it? Peoples morals/values are so messed up right now and I see it happening long before the riots even started, but are single parent families really the ones to blame? I’m from a single parent family, my father was never around, yet my mother did a good job! I don’t think that can be used as an excuse.

Or is it the media feeding into the weak and fragile minds of confused individuals, so they believe material assets are the only thing they need? The society we live in is so based on looks and what you ‘have’ right now, this isn’t even an issue with just young people or black people or poor people! EVERYBODY ALWAYS WANTS MORE, I think we are all guilty of greed, never knowing when what we have is enough.

Others blame faith? People just aren’t scared of the consequences anymore, the line between right and wrong is wearing thin, Hell? What Hell? Some people would say I’m not really a religious person, but then again, most people that assume they know me really don’t know NADA. I just don’t believe what other people believe in regards to ‘Jesus’ and ‘God’. Religion isn’t something I really touch on with my work, its too complicated and sensitive for my young soul to construct within a picture, but it will most certainly be something I address in the later stages of my life.

I’m not sure if a lack of faith can really be blamed for the riots either, or if it is, maybe its because faith isn’t very fashionable right now? I’ve noticed peoples allegiance to The House of Faith slowly dying from years ago and personally I think Sunday’s best disappears further back into the dark depths of closets everywhere, with every week that passes! People are giving up hope. It makes me scared for the future, scared to have children, but as people we need to be so strong, life isn’t easy on any of us… I could really ramble on for ever once I get started, so let me just shut up now.

It will be remembered as a sad time for Great British history, I want to end this post here as a moment of silence to all those who lost something or someone, much love to you all. Well done to the Metropolitan police for not letting it get TOO out of hand, things could have been a lot worse actually, but I seriously doubt this is the end of it all. My special project, special to ME.

In recent conversations I’ve had with bookers at agencies, it seems there’s no secret to the pattern in models I discover and like to work with… I am slowly putting together a book based on people of mixed ethnicities, but NO, that does not make me a ‘race photographer’, whatever the Hell that is. I photograph everyone and anyone with no bias in my soul, but because of my own mixed raced backgrounds, its a personal project and a reflection of myself as an artist, nothing more, nothing less.

The latest addition to my book has been Zachary Watson from Wolverhampton, TOTALLY NATURAL, NO MAKE UP OR RETOUCHING. As I said in a previous post, my camera has a fixation to freckles recently and Zach has a ton of em! I remember when my baby sitter used to tell me; “People with freckles get them from scraping off poo via the bottom of car tyres and using a lollipop stick to eat it”… hmmm, and my mother used to leave me with this woman?

Working with my old friends at ICERBRANDS, I quickly shot out this look-book for Sean John UK, another new name in the list of big American brands I have worked with here in London: New Era, Marc Ecko, Applebottoms… I wonder who will be next.

Accompanying Theio for the day was another Elite member called Jake Hold. Sometimes I get a bit funny when people bring others along, I’ve noticed the extra company can really put them off or in actual fact help them SOMETIMES, but the connection between just the model with a photographer shouldn’t be underestimated, I know it sounds arty-farty, but it really is about the energy in the room between two people.

I’ve had this pose in my head forever now! Don’t ask why, I know there’s definitely something very Rihanna-esque about it; “Take the gun, and count to three, I’m sweating now, moving slow, no time to think, my turn to go…”, the intensity in Jake's eyes, his toned body, it all contributes to make this image what it is. There’s even something about the pose that reminds me of ‘shooting’ a self portrait, really I should have used this pose for myself, but oh-well! I also used photoshop to add some movement/blur effects, just seemed right with the fire and Da Vinci tattoo, noo! I’m not trying to say anything *rolls eyes*, just like a Gaga video, this is art, you interpret it how ever you like. Thanks Jake.

I have watched the progress of this guys image for so long now, literally years! From his days up in Manchester on Myspace with pictures of his long curly hair, to present day with a slick little high top, Mr. Maddix makes it look so good, I want one too!

Theio Maddix, now signed to Elite! I knew one thing for certain before this collaboration took place, I always had this image of Theio really stretching his body, incorporating his dance skills into the shoot, which I have seen him use on X-Factor countless times before! Along with his model looks and a touch of TOPMAN inspiration, I think we done pretty well.

In another arrangement with Models1, they also let me test some models for a juicy little shoot I put together with STORM jewellery and Leonard from Flavour Magazine. Just as an experiment Lauren Baker and myself bumped heads to create something special for our books. I have recently taken a strong interest to freckles and anything that looks ‘lush’, superb work Lauren, I’m sure no one disagrees?

Working with Models1 again! I got to test with some of their female faces. Collaborating with make up artist Joy Adenuga, both of us are trying to take our portfolios in a new direction, so these shots certainly hit the spot. Arabella Stanforth? You are a dream to work with, even though we couldn’t put any make up on your eye lids due to a MUA messing them up the day before!!! We worked it out in the end, duhhh! Of course we did.

I actually wasn’t bothered by the gap in Arabella’s two front teeth that much, I’m sure lots of other photographers love it, but I admired this young lady’s conviction to telling a story with her eyes. Opening up to me, telling me about her past and ethnic backgrounds, all these things matter, I live to listen to others and that really does count when you’re a ‘good’ photographer, making sure your model feels comfortable enough to connect with you on mental level.

Shooting with Naomi Gray once again! Something quite different from our previous beauty shoot, we worked with M1 from the former hip hop duo Dead Prez, he needed some new images as a solo artist. We used M1’s accommodation at The Landmark Hotel in Marylebone as our location, a very last minute arrangement indeed, but as you learn in this industry, you have to work with what you have, no complaints! Me and M1 spent the good part of half an hour talking about Nicki Minaj's Super Bass video and how brilliant she is! lol

Another amazing body I got to work with recently is Redmann Neale, a new face in the world of fitness modelling, but a strong contender for others to watch out for. For one of his first fitness shoots ever Redmann hooked up with yours truly, the definition this guy has is incredible!

Tired of using obvious studio lighting, I decided to use the natural light through my studio window. Redmann has such a cut physique already, it wasn’t necessary for me to use hard spot lights on his body, I wanted to capture his lean torso in its true state, for the temple it really is. Already qualifying as one of the top entries for Men’s Health and Fitness 2011 using the pictures we took together, I know he is going to raise the level by a few bars, literally! Go team RED!

Pretty little Anna, Hollyoaks meets Harry Potter

Also for a feature spread in the same issue of Pride, me and Afua Adom tracked up to Liverpool for an interview and behind the scenes with Anna Shaffer, a beautiful young lady who plays Ruby Button in Hollyoaks. Coincidently Anna has an amazing face for the special project I've been working on, even better she has offered to contribute ;).

Although Hollyoaks isn’t on the top of my ‘To watch before I go to bed list’, it was certainly very interesting to walk around the sets, see how there built, the use of space and meeting other characters from the show. Anna has also worked on numerous Harry Potter films, including the final chapter in the series “The Deathly Hollows: Part 2” where she plays a helpless victim to Lord Voldemort’s attack on Hogwarts, nearly ending in total devastation until… well I wont spoil it for those of you who haven’t seen it.

Bashing beauty and the beast, for Pride.

Number 2! I got another pretty little beauty spread featured in Pride Magazine, very different from my first, a lot more allusive with strong African influence. I wanted to work with Isa-Welly Locoh for the longest, especially after seeing her dance for the Tinie Tempah’s "Frisky" music video, she’s like a jungle cat, the way she moves and exuberates confidence.

But in actual fact she wasn’t as confident as she may seem in these pictures! Me, Sunanda Mesquita (make up artist) and Naomi Gray (stylist) spent most of the day trying to relax our Welly! I did tell her that she would be modelling with a snake, but did forget to mention the part about how big it is, WOOPS lol.

Me and miss Gray calming the beast lol. In the end we pulled off some great shots though and that’s all that matters! ;). Thanks to Kristian Edwards for letting me borrow the snake and Grace McComisky for the custom made *antlers*, NOT HORNS!

Previous to my work with Dionne Smith for Sleek Hair, we also contributed on a small editorial for Black Beauty and Hair magazine together, using a selection of hand picked models by Dionne Smith, including the glamour puss which is Tabby Brown.

The spread was all about colour so I decided to edit in a few splashes of paint, nothing too major. Would have been slightly more momentous if we used real paint, but I figured weaves + paint? They probably aren’t the best of friends! So maybe another time... I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FOURTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FOURTH, okay, shutting up.

Saffi wants "the soft lighting"...

Shortly afterwards me and Saffi Karina planned to work together on our own shoot, she had seen some previous work I posted with Lisa Maffia, going crazy the “soft lighting” I used, saying “I want that same lighting Arron, that same soft light, do you know what I mean?”, I replied: “Yeees Saffi, I know what you meeean!” lol. Another model who I have watched progress over the years! This girl BOOKS.

So just to confirm, THESE ARE NOT THE “SOFT LIGHTING SHOTS” lol. I’m quite bored with that lighting right now, unless it involves a forest, some red clothes and nice weather, I’m not doing that lighting again... I have a vision in mind that I want to save, but still! These shots are pretty cool, I really do love a plain backdrop with all eyes on the model and what she can do, how she sells herself and the clothing without the drama and theatrics of 5 different lights, 10 props and a whole custom made set. J’adore!

Sleek hair, parting please.

So this job was a long time coming, I have always seen Sleek campaigns before in the past and told myself “I can do that!”, but I want to take Sleek hair further! Give it more of a creative feel behind the images, my first shoot for them was simple and effective for showing the product. Sleek told me “Do you know how long its been since we actually got to see a hair parting in the photography for our images? It's always so dark!”, well I don’t know why that is Sleek? Its just a simple hair light I added! But anyways… I’m glad you all liked it x.

I got to work with a few familiar faces on this project, such as models Saffi Karina and Rachael Williams, even the make up artist Pauline Briscoe! Not to forget my long term working colleague Dionne Smith and her team! x

The pictures will be used across seas in Africa and China, on the packaging of hair everywhere, yaaay for me! I feel its an accomplishment, especially to know I have helped Sleek up their lighting game, its all about pushing forward with any brand I work with and I say the word ‘with’ very intentionally. When a client hires me, I am not simply working for them, but with them! Regardless of how experienced or inexperienced they may be in the industry, I work to offer quality and team work is essential in a production like this.

These simple and pretty flicks were taken with designer and stylist Adam Mosley, a former fashion student from St. Martins, he hand crafted all the clothes himself with beads and buttons sewn onto the jumper and structured material to form wraps in the garments. I think I would wear the jumper myself, it would probably look a bit gay though, hehe...

Okay, so I’ve have talked about the strength of women a lot in this post, what about the strength of men? Here we have Ru Wikmann, a fitness fanatic and male model from London who recently came 2nd in a body building competition called “Fame UK”.

Something I have noticed when photographing the male form? It’s A LOT harder to create a shape with a man’s body as opposed to a woman’s, men just don’t move the same, its like they cant use their hips, so poses begin to look the same, but I encourage the male models I work with to move, bend, stretch and MOVE! something I want to develop further in my later work. It’s a rare opportunity I get to work with other ‘artists’, painters or sketchers… but on a pleasant opportunity with beauty sketcher Terrence Brown, we photographed his new series of female portraits, he produces some really graceful and elegant pictures, with a very deep meaning! Focusing around the death of his mother and the effects of cancer, a subject that is very, VERY close to me also, following the death of my grandmother a few years back.

The way his artwork is so detailed and crisp, he combines the beauty of the eastern world with architectural constructions in the background, leading to some intriguing connotations. Terrence’s use of harsh shading is quite intentional, influenced by bold make up, depicting the strength of women everywhere, with long hair or no hair, combining a impressive blend of fashion, beauty, illustration and empowerment.

One of my favourites from Terrence Brown! Think about the process that happens when going through chemotherapy, the loss of identity women have to face without their hair, the senses of androgyny.

So after reviewing my portfolio further, I found that I was also missing a red head, red heads are mysterious and wonderful creatures to work with, their different than the usual blondes or brunettes and offer more room for creativity, with an alternative angle on the concepts of ‘beauty’. My friend Karn Kachiko introduced me to her friend Ciara Murphey, a very modest young lady, with limitless potential and natural beauty that is outstanding. Thanks Karn :), asking around for things can help out a lot when your stuck!

Working with fresh faces has helped to open up my creativity, using different lighting in the shoot above with Ciara, with minor tweaks in each frame, but each with its own sense of feeling. I know people say “Your work with guys is amazing, you need to do more”, but I really am stunned by the shapes and versatility of women’s faces, their hair, the shape of their lips, even the curves of their bodies, the sensuality involved in shooting women is a lot deeper compared to men.

Thankfully an amazing stylist by the name of Naomi Gray arranged a meeting for me with Donna Green at Models1, after a great meeting with Donna she asked me to work with one of their new faces Mike Shirley, a great face who has had interest from both Givenchy and Burberry, with a very classical look.

Mike Shirley is also a trained carpenter, so you never know what model potential lies within the grains of dust and wood chippings. I tried to combine some of Mike’s craftsmanship with the designs Katie Mcdowall used to style the shoot, with textures layered over the images using photoshop.

With Faye now packing up her make up brushes to try something different, she now sells clothing made by some very talented designers at a pretty little store called Avenue Boutique in Richmond. For the launch Faye wanted some new fashion shots to put around the store, nothing to bold, just a pretty face with some nice lighting. Oh boy, so I haven’t kept up to date with this as originally planned! But I have been keeping busy with new projects… some old, dating way back to 2009! Its taking me time to find all the faces I need, this project (book) could take a while, *ponders completion*, anyways…

So I’m always talking about ‘eyes’ and how important they are, a few people have even said to me recently “Yeah, I hear your funny about eyes, models have to look at you right?”, the answer to that is noo? lol that’s so not true! Recently I have encouraged people to look away from the camera, as its not easy to gaze into the lens with an air of confidence that says ‘I know you want this…’

Its hard for me to describe exactly, but eyes really are the gateway to the soul which either makes me believe your devotion to the ‘moment’ or makes your face look like, well? A BRUCK UP AMAETUER THAT DOESNT HAVE A CLUE, LIKE A DEER IN HEADLIGHTS BEFORE ITS FINAL MOMENTS, NOT, GOOD. A perfect example of this has to be a guy I worked with called Matt Bailey (above). Oh and btw, just because your eyes are closed in a shot, doesn't mean you can get away with it, I need to feel your soul! Sisco Gomez and dance history

This post is going to take me back a bit… it isn’t until I sit here and really think about it, but I actually leant a lot from this guy, he taught me things about myself and my career, we spent quite a lot of time together… not so much anymore, as I’m busy and his VERY BUSY lol. Sisco has gone on to achieve some amazing things since our collaborations together and he just keeps growing, from strength to strength, he has always encouraged me, so for that I am thankful.

I took these around a year ago when he first made his appearance on So You Think You Can Dance? A year on and his back on there again, throwing out brash comments and getting teary eyed then and again lol, its only because he cares and he is passionate in his work, don’t take his criticisms too harshly people! Lol

If I recall correctly, dancers where always the first and only people who had time for me when I started training as a dancer back 6 years ago, I would experiment with photography, trying to capture backward summersaults, spins and catapults lol, it was a good introductory basis for me to start learning about ‘time and space’, how dancers synchronise and vital symmetry.

Another guy from above who I got to work with a lot is Kenrick of Boy Blue, also without any limits right now. Much love to him and any other dancer who helped me along the way, there are way too many of you for me to sit here and name, but Kymberlee J, Kenrick, Jay Revell, Turbo, Darelle, Kamuran Kavaz, Sisco Gomez, Marco Da Silva… you guys really allowed me to test my creativity a lot and what’s more, you all TRUSTED ME 100% with your image.

Thanks guys, if it wasn’t for you I would not be in the position I am today, dancing improved my confidence ten times fold! I used to be the guy who sat in the dark corner with the base system booming through my body like an emo child with the shakes, now I’m the over opinionated, very cocky and sarcastic, mixed up photographer that people see and hear about at present, I JOKE, I JOKE! Lol, never that.

Awww, little dance video from back in the day featuring Ms. Prissy (in the middle), I got to meet some really interesting people from taking classes, it really was what kicked everything off. For all of you who don’t know who Ms. Prissy is, she is like, THE REASON WHY JESSE J DOES “IT LIKE A BROTHER”, she is a krumper from South America that helped give birth to the dance movement krumping, which was first seen by her and others in Madonna’s “Hung Up” music video and is still used today by people such as Jesse J in her “Do it like a dude” video. If you don’t know about clowning/krumping, I suggest you go and watch Rize, THAT MY FRIENDS IS A DANCE MOVIE, a full length documentary and the first ever of its kind by David LaChapelle.

The very 'Wilde' Collection, by William Wilde

I have had the chances to work with so many great designers recently, there has been Tatum Mizzilli, Ara Jo and now also William Wilde! All of these talented designers have made custom pieces for the likes of Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga and Rihanna, if that isn’t being on top of your game, then I don’t know what is, but I feel that none of these originators have come anywhere really near the threshold in their abilities, they are all so different.

William Wilde has been the most recent, represented by BLOW PR he is making quite a controversial stamp in the fashion world right now, with an even more controversial music video featuring his latex garments... have you guessed yet? Its Rihanna’s S&M! The heavily inspired David LaChapelle video directed by Melina Matsoukas. I really, REALLY liked the video, as I do with most of Ri-Ris videos, but unfortunately the one thing that did scream out to me as first was LACHAPELLE, if it wasn’t for researching about the video, I would have still been thinking he was the one who directed it, but we all have to take inspiration from somewhere and who greater than the Lord of Light and Colour himself?

The ‘Wilde’ new collection entitled “Through With Love” (shot by yours truly hehe), will be used by William for his new look book, he has traded in some of the latex for very elegant kimonos, with strong shapes and beautiful patterns. When I asked Mr. Wilde about his inspirations for designing, he referenced a few photographers for my better understanding, obviously LaChapelle being one of them, but others such as Pierre et Gilles and Guy Bourdin! I haven’t heard either of these names for a while now, but it was refreshing to hear someone say names that aren't the usual!

Above is Mr. Wilde himself! There is something about him that looks a little bit ‘Wild’ right? I’m not sure what it is… he actually looks like a model I have worked with as well called Anthony Lowther! Who coincidently I shot in leather pants and gloves a couple of years back, wild people and their fetishes aii? lol

Faith Evans - "There's Something About Faith Evans"

Finally got to post these up! A few images taken from my photoshoot with Faith Evans back in December 2010, set up by Lauraine Bailey and Darren Scott, thank you very much guys, it was great working together all for the first time on such a big project. We had under an hour to smack out three looks and it was my first time photographing such a major celebrity from the states, obviously I have shot other music artists on stage before such as Beyonce Knowles, Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes, Brandy and even interviewed others like Janet Jackson and Alicia Keys! But somehow this felt different, more personal… Faith is a true ‘Diva’, she is old school and an artist I really look up to from back in the day of ‘real’ R&B, a power figure and inspiration for the life she has lived, MUCH RESPECT FAITH EVANS.

Irene at Black Beauty and Hair was kind enough to feature some of the images from the shoot in a small interview she had with Faith, but right here you're getting one extra exclusive, actually one of my favs from the shoot! The full body picture with the flowers in the background "This is the, Heartbreak Hotel". When the shoot was all over with, I quickly reviewed some of the shots with Faith and she must have said one of the greatest things: “Oh damn ya’ll, I’m gonna have to come back to London, I should have been having stuff like this from years ago”, she was also very kind enough to make a surprise phonecall to one of my best friends JaeJarel Mitchell! A very lovely lady indeed, Faith will hopefully be coming back to London very soon and we can go for part 2, but longer this time and much more organised!

Yet again the beautiful hand of fate knocks at my door, isn’t it funny that so soon after finding one of the next best black male models of all time, his name being Rob EVANS and then I get to shoot with Faith EVANS, it all seems a bit weird right? Gotta have FAITH and look out for those signs people! You will know when your on the right track.

Working more and more closely with agencies now, Elite sent this young lady to me by the name of Holly, a pleasure to work with, taking direction well and using her own initiative as a model. 'Model initiative' is something I will get into a little later in my blog, its a term I use when models help to bounce ideas and inspire photographers. Amie Williams on the make up for her new portfolio, I would say she is off to a flying start.

I really struggle in photoshop sometimes, using colour and monotone... I love both of these pictures above, but there is something about the black and white that captures me, but its hard to explain exactly what.

Samsung 'Now' Project

Soon to be exhibiting at The Design Museum in London! Much love to Tamara and Drew who made this happen, taking time out of their busy schedules to come and record me for the online advert. By the powers granted at Samsung, they choose to make me one of their ambassadors for the 'Now' project in 2011, sending me my own Samsung Wave II to take pictures with and edit shots, its a powerful little phone with impressive quality settings.

Above are some of the pictures taken from my day-to-day antics, here, there and everywhere, some of them quite personal, while others more work related. Apparently one or two were QUITE popular on twitter lol, shame I mine isn't fully active as of yet, would have been able to join the fun! Oh well... lol

Shout out to Mr. Zack Tate on the styling! "Its Liiiisa, MAFFIA!" That was such a tune back in the day, still is as a matter of fact!

So we laid out some strict rules for our Lisa, "NO HANDS ON HIPS!", its always the one pose you see music artists do the most and to be honest, its a bit dead now... I think me and Zack wanted to make Lisa more dynamic than that, she is a very beautiful lady who has a lot to offer, sexually, musically and most importantly SENSUALLY.

Hey people! So I don’t expect you to go through every word! Although I think it makes a good read, just pick out the bits you like and ignore the parts you don’t wanna know :)

A lot of you message me on facebook and model mayhem asking me the same questions, wanting to know more about me, how I got started, what I do, who inspires me… For some of you who have followed me for a while now, let me just say I am one man. I am no where near where I want to be in my career and finding myself as an artist, that will come in time, but hopefully this blog will help to give you a good insight to me as a person and as a creator, if not then oh-well, at least it will make a good diary for now!

Photographer Vs. Muse

Briefly I would like to big up a few people who have stood by me and been a HUGE part of my creative process. First up, Duke Dadzie! Not many people know this, but me and Duke actually went to the same secondary school, we grew up together and he was the VERY first person I photographed. At the time I was sitting my GCSE’s he was there to muse for me, years later look how things have turned out, he is now an international model signed with an agency, travelling to places like New York and Africa, then look at me, just in the same position as a photographer, working for the same companies and travelling to the same places, God is good my friends.

I will NEVER forget

Speaking of places like Africa, I now remember my beautiful trip to Gambia! I was shooting for TMC (I MISS YOU GUYS), fashion shoots on the beach and in some of The Gambia’s most luxurious hotels, also meeting the president, his Excellency Yahya AJJ Jammeh, being treated like a king in my own right. It was quite surreal waking up to huge lizards and monkeys walking around outside my hotel room!

When I did eventually arrive back home on UK soil, I was rushed off to this photo shoot with my school girl Jody Parchment, getting models to walk around in these shoes was QUITE a feat, especially considering how tired I was, but we got it done. Jody is another talented individual who came from my own secondary school, EASTBURY COMPREHENSIVE!!! Jody gave birth to this beautiful shoe collection named after her own heart, also soon to be pushing out a real baby boy ;), congratulations Jody!!

Funny how this shoot came about, as me and Little Miss Parchment were not the best of friends growing up in school together haha, lets just say we didn’t see eye-to-eye, but its good we now share a common vision, as you can see…

Speaking of common vision, I would also like to thank my hair stylist Kara Chance, I work with a lot of creative people and seriously believe without unity, real works of art are harder to achieve, but the thing about Kara is, she ALWAYS gets my vision, I don’t need to explain things twice, she has a real passion for her work and is a true perfectionist.

Design is key, Cancers rule

Lastly I would also like to give thanks to my boy Mr. Batlow, he is really changing up the style of work recently and is going through strength to strength, being a talented designer in all forms of graphic, clothing and set making, I know this guy is destined for many great things. Again someone who I share a common vision with, our ideas always seem to meet right in the middle, we are people who know what we want and what level we have to work in order to keep quality as its highest. Thanks for the set design on there pieces!

Some very dated pictures now, but still some of my favourites. They come from a period in my work where I played a lot with colour and was intrigued by various body art such as tattoos. Its very, VERY hard to keep a clean canvas when working with so many palettes, you have to try and avoid things looking too messy, I think we done well guys! Inspiration for this project came from fellow Cancerian Missy Elliott - “Work It!”, ohh :(, I miss those days! “Boys, boys, all types of boys, black, white Puerto-Rican, Chinese boys!”. Batlow spray painted the set for me and it met my every expectation, another Cancerian genius! I‘m big on star signs :). Thanks New Era who supplied clothing, also to Raphael D’ Ascenzo (model from Germany), Toshi Takahashi (jewellery designer from Japan), Curtis Small (grime artist from Reading) and even Ashley Walters who took part in the project, what a bunch! lol

There are lots of other people I would like to thank, especially my make up artist Giselle Alie, who is also a Cancerian!!!! Lol, its gonna seem like I just work with Cancerians, heeey! What can I say, we are emotional, sensitive and creative people, “practically perfect in every way :)”, ahhh, I love Mary Poppins! She reminds me of my nan, sad times…

2010 - Key to the future, or my future at least!

Anyways! On a more positive note I am going to run through some highlights of 2010, bringing to light certain events that took place, which in turn lead me to being where I am today. By coincidence some of them contributing to one of the most weird and wonderful years of my entire life, where my past dreams mixed with the present of reality and future career desires.

Chat and sing-song with A. Keys, enter the muse and superfriend

Starting off 2010 with some good old fashioned “Fireworks”, I got to meet up and have a chat with one of my biggest aspirations in life and music, its Alicia Keys! Performing a very private set at the Maida Vale for 1Xtra, she banged out some classical pieces on the piano and then introduced us to some snippets from the new album: “The Element of Freedom”. I was free to ask her absolutely anything I wanted, so I mentioned her influences in reggae beats with classical tones, plus how she always seems to stay so reserved, it’s a hard thing to do! One thing Alicia also told me is that I should never keep negative people around me, they will always bring me down, even if they dont mean to, its not good energy, you can only succeed with the most pure and positive vibes in mind, body and soul. I will always remember that night, I had some very close people with me, I managed to smuggle in my mum, her good friend Syreeta McQueen and my little big brother Dennis Rouillon, who is also one of my muses and helped me to grow so much last year as a person and with personal projects close to my heart, oh guess what? HIS A CANCERIAN LOL!

Although not in vain, it’s a New Era

After getting this amazing opportunity with 1Xtra, I decided to start applying for a few jobs, I was nearing the end of my degree and thought it would be cool to hop straight into work after I left university, a couple of them were pretty big! Slightly gutted I got so far in the application process, beating off literally thousands of other people to get interviews (without any employers actually seeing my photography work!), attending assessment centres up and down Britain, they can be pretty intense. I remember getting up at 5am and travelling all the way from Vauxhall to Manchester, that was quite a journey, especially considering I had never been before! Despite my efforts, I was not offered a position for the jobs I applied for, but that didn’t matter to me, at least I got to see my friend Marlon Mckenzie, as there was no other way I was going to travel all the way up to Manchester just for the sake of it! Marlon was actually a recent contender in last years X-factor, he has an amazing talent and I still cant believe Dannii Minogue didn’t pick him for her camp, ohh Dannii!!! :(

But as I hope he realises and as I found out for myself, everything happens for a reason and the next few months would prove it, going on to graduate with a 2.1 in Journalism combined with Photography at Roehampton, I really thought I would get a 2.2, but hey-hey! My hard work paid off that time, especially considering other things I was trying to juggle outside of university, teaming up with companies like Boxing News and Fighting Fit Magazine, Pride, Punkyfish and New Era for the fourth time at their Iron Man Launch at Brewer Street.

When I started working with Fighting Fit magazine, it was something I had never tried before, photographing pro boxers and cage fighters. Nick Bond the editor at Fighting Fit allowed me full creative direction, working with people such as Olympic gold medallist James DeGale and UFC fighter John Hathaway, producing lead stories for the cover and inside articles, which was published in places such as WHSmith.

Soon to be the next… dare I say it

After graduating from Roehampton and working with more publications, I started to expand on my personal work, looking for people who I wanted to shoot, rebuilding my book with new faces. Anyone who knows me, knows that I enjoy shooting people, characters, faces and that fashion is a recent development in my work, but apparently something I am naturally quite good at, thank the Lord.

Then one day I was merrily browsing through facebook and I came across this guy by the name of Robert Evans, he actually came up on my muses facebook page who I introduced earlier, Mr. Dennis Rouillon! There was something interesting about Rob’s face and it appeared he was into boxing, which was a coincidence considering my work with Fighting Fit! So I made a small introduction to this fellow and said I would like to shoot him, he kept putting it off for a while, but the more I looked at his pictures, the more I became curious about his face, body, eye colour, okay, shut up now Arron, your beginning to sound like a stalker haha. Finally after a cancellation and being about 2 hours late, he turns up at my little studio in New Cross Gate, ready and willing to get shot up by yours truly…

To cut a long story short, anyone who knows the fashion industry, knows exactly who this guy is, those of you who don’t, well! You will have to Google him to fully understand this post, he is set to be the next best thing!

I have learnt a lot watching him grow these last several months, we both went through some drama with each other and other individuals, but I’m glad its all settled now, its not good to argue about materialistic things, especially not in the world of today! After him jetting off to model for Givenchy as ‘look number 20’ in last years fashion week, being noted as i-D magazines top face to watch for 2010, doing various editorials with Bruce Weber, Nick Knight, Solve Sundsbo and obviously moi for Ftape.com, which can be found here: www.ftape.com/colab/?portfolio=i-am-rob-evans, it is clear Rob Evans is set for some pretty ground breaking success. I am still waiting for him to book that first music video, I am hoping its either Beyonce or Gaga! Go on Gaga, you know you want to lol

I have to admit, at the time I was unsure of how well he could actually do in the industry, I never knew his full potential, I just shot him because I liked the way he looked lol! I knew he could definitely do something in the industry, especially if he was to live out in America, but to the extent he has gone on and achieved is incredible for a guy his size! Now signed with Major in New York, only days after I came back from my first real holiday out there, he was rushed away out there himself, now living between London and New York. Here is something we recorded the day before he left for his adventure, thank you very much Michael Adeyeye for the clip! The exotic looking chick standing around at the 40 second mark is Marissa Jiang, she just came to stand around for the day, just a normal day in the studio lol

The theme tune was perfect for this, sooo relevant! Let this PLEASE be a valuable lesson to everyone who reads this, always follow your heart, the amount of times I have heard people say “you live in London, its not about the big guys” and then to know I was the first person ever to find and shoot Rob Evans, THE Rob Evans who measures in at 6’4, has the body of an African Warrior and is so humble, then to see him catapult to places other models would normally wait years to see, its an honour from God and a blessing to the both of us.

Be inspired

If it wasn’t for growing up and flicking through the pages of magazines like The Source, XXL and Vibe, I would never have given this guy a second look, now also digging down copies of Italian Vogue, V Magazine, LOVE, Wonderland, Dazed & Confused and i-D, the creative minds behind these magazines are the worlds best! It has now become clear to me that maybe London is not the best place for me to be…only time will tell and I do love London, of course I do, its home! But yeeeeah.

Nai, nai, naaaai!

Previously working with N’Dubz for a promotional shoot, they published their first auto biography last year, using over 25 of the images from the same shoot to make up pages in the book “AGAINST ALL ODDS From Streetlife to Chartlife”, plus a blow out poster! Always loved N’Dubz since the days of “Better not waste my time, I got better things on my mind!”

Sports = Fashion, Fashion = Future

So with the Olympics soon approaching, a few photoshoots have been coming up combining fashion with sports people, a cool idea and something we will see featured a lot more in fashion magazines closer to 2012. So I decided to hop on a few projects with stylist Koulla Sergi and sports development team GSE agency, suiting up athletes in their prime, such as bronze winning gymnast Louis Smith, judo champion Ashley Mckenzie and ping-pong pro Darius Knight.

BASRA

Shortly after I collaborated with a guy called Krishan Basra, he seriously upgraded my male fashion portfolio and helped to take my lighting to new levels, he was switching agencies and needed some new looks, somehow he found me on facebook and we hooked it up. Big thanks to Krishan, love these images, without saying anything, they say a lot, with minimal effect, they are effortless in the best of ways.

You better get signed, like urm, NOW

After the discovery of male model Rob Evans, you would think that would be enough lol, but no! Another male model who I suggested make his way to Select was Omari Dixon. I remember as soon as his uncle Neal McLeod bringing him in to see me, the first thing I said was “Urrrrm! Why isn’t he signed yet?” lol, Neal replies “Well that’s what were here for!” He still has some growing to do, some experience to gain, but give him a few years and I know we will be seeing his face all over the place.

Back in 2007 I remember having the privilege to work with another model from Select, a VERY talented young gentleman by the name of Oliver Cheshire, so I kind of knew how Select operated as an agency and what it is they go for in a male model. I know this sounds a bit odd when I say ‘talented’, but to be a supermodel you have to know what your doing, it’s a skill! Perhaps not to look good, but to really look into the camera and gaze at your viewer to the point where I am thinking ‘Wow’ and getting really excited, it’s a hard thing to do… that reads a bit wrong lol, but you know what I mean.

Oh look, it’s a Punkyfish

Being so closely linked to companies such as Applebottoms and Marc Ecko from 2009, it was only a natural progression for me to start working with a new brand in 2010, enter Punkyfish! Thanks to Vanessa for modelling, Giselle for make up and the fun fair people for letting us use the grounds as a location! Punkyfish is a very fun brand, so I wanted to keep things bright, sweet and well yeah, ‘fun’! Cue the fairground!

Get ya lights knocked out

Another guy I have to hand it to is Dudley O'Shaughnessy, a second boxer turned model , but don’t let this guys full lips, pretty eyes and high cheek bones fool you, this guy is a knock out, both in the ring and in front of the camera. Ever since dying his hair blonde, there has not been one meeting I go into without a stylist mentioning his name lol, wise move Dudley, you have your girlfriend Letitia to thank for that! Here I wanted to explore with ‘dark’ and ‘light’ sides, crossing aspects of ‘race’, albinism and touching on photography by Oleg Dou.

Simply Mel Rose

Ahhh, beautiful Mel Rose, it was an honour indeed. Mel Rose is known mostly from America’s Next Top Model cycle 7, coming so close to winning, but landing 2nd place in the show unfortunately! Very unexpectedly she messaged me on facebook, she liked my work and wanted to do some stuff together when she reached London, obviously I accepted! Recruiting Giselle for make up, Crystal Deroche for the styling, Kara Chance for hair and Rio Vencietti for assistance, what a team! Thanks guys, Mel Rose was very pleased with the outcome, using pieces from Pierre Garroudi was a real treat, the craftsmanship in his work is incredible.

So sometimes you get people who you really want to shoot, but they either ignore you or say no, which is to be expected, not everyone likes getting their picture taken, but I tend to find those who say it out of pure arrogance end up eating their words later, as I either end up shooting them for someone else, they see me at a casting and feel like a tit or they have to end up paying more that I was originally offering! This situation was slightly like that lol, although he denies it! Daniel Louisy is another guy I got to work with last year and so he always tells me, “these are the best images of me anyone has ever taken” and he has worked on a lot of high profile projects, nice to know my stuff isn’t all that bad then Daniel? Lol, the images made a nice story and were featured online by thehorizonmag.com and in Essence Magazine!

Was that really necessary?

Okay, so this is on a bit of a bad note, but something I feel needs to be addressed, as it was something I was involved in and feel things were handled in a slightly unfair manner… one of my best friends, if not my closest friend JaeJarel Mitchell was featured in a TV show earlier this year called “Michel Roux’s Service”. When I heard about the filming taking place last year (2010), I put him forward for a position as one of Michel’s trainees, he has a good skill for cooking, a passion for service and I REALLY think he would make a good TV personality if the right opportunity presented its self. So for those of you who did watch the show, you know what the deal is, his behaviour was not the best at times and I have told him this myself, but obviously I have more inside information that I can not really say and I know Jarel on a personal level, ways in how he acted were totally natural, so maybe I’m being slightly biased? Having seen and heard a lot of opinions in regards to his dismissal by Michel Roux on the show, most of which has been the same as myself, I feel his behaviour at times was BAD, but NOT THAT BAD that he had to get booted off of the show. At the end of the day as I said before, everything happens for a reason and sometimes we need to go through these painful rejections in order to make us wiser for the future.

Lets face it folks, his personality was maybe a bit too big for “Michel Roux’s Service”, I am waiting for the day he gets his own show, he has too much character, it needs to be shared with the world. I will VERY rarely put things on this blog that I did not shoot myself, but because of the nature in how I was involved and personal opinion, this is a subject I wanted to cover.

Oh well, New York, New York it is!

Well, from one sad story to one life changing experience, perhaps the best of both mine and my friend Jarel’s lives! Here today, gone tomorrow, leaving behind London and the bad experience with Michel Roux, we set our sights on NEW YORK! Somewhere that definitely is big enough to handle the both of us, more him than me! Lol, im the quiet one! Well, maybe I’m not that quiet haha, New York certainly brought something out in me, shhhh, lets not get into that lol. To say the least, New York is my life for now, I have set my sights on living there and unless I fall madly in love with someone from London, which could happen… ! Its not highly likely I will stay here forever, the longer I wait, the more time that I waste and I plan to move around a lot, like I said, nothing is for certain though, in God I trust.

It was so crazy out there, its like everywhere you turn ‘there walks another good looking person’, ‘OMG, check out Ms. Oriental thing strutting through Times Square’, ‘did you just see that guy? That’s Oraine Barrett!’, slightly intimidating to be quite frank! But me and Jarel held our corner well, you know they love the British accent out there, a bit of Queens tongue got me free drinks all night, so talking like a snob really does have its advantages :).

I remember walking out of my hotel room one morning, looking over to a red Cocoa Cola van and seeing this Latino guy all sweated up, with engine oil over his arms, some sick tattoos (bottom left)… I was just like ‘HA, well there’s a Cocoa Cola guy you don’t see everyday in London, not even on TV!’, had to take a picture of him, even though his boss was pissed! That’s what I love about New Yorkers though, they do not feel ANY WAY to tell you what is exactly on their mind, I would rather have someone be straight with me, then act all bent up and out of shape, SAY WHATS ON YA MIND ENNIT?! There is too many confused people out here!!! READ THAT HOWEVER YOU WISH, IT’S THE TRUTH!!! LOL

Coming back from New York I remember actually shedding a few tears on the plane, as Nicki Minaj would put it “I wish that I could have this moment for life, this is my moment I just feel so alive…”. They LOVE her to death out there, all I heard was Nicki, Nicki, Nicki all night long in the club, then vogue dancers would come out to separate the crowd, start battling it out, freaky Latinos all getting messy in the corner, by this time I am in the zone and dancing like a CRRRAAZY PERSON. Although we didn’t go out to NY purely for the clubs, we travelled around! Staten Island, up-town, down-town, Harlem, Brooklyn, The Statue of Liberty... We did stay around Manhattan mostly, the one place we didn’t get to go was Central Park!!!! Hopefully next time. Note to the UK fast food industry, we need a "BBQS" over here pronto, maybe some Red Lobster and Applebees! You know how we do! Also got to see In The Heights with Corbin Bleu, still need to buy the soundtrack for that! Plus getting some tickets with our buddies in the Big Apple to see Salt starring Angelina Jolie! What a perfect place to watch such a great movie, right in the middle of New York where it was all filmed!

By fate I feel this trip was very long awaited, meeting Alicia Keys at the beginning of the year, only for her to bring out New York State of Mind with Jay-Z a few months later, finding Rob Evans and seeing how well his done out there, surely these events must be a sign? Only time will tell.

Minaj, Mizzalli, Minaj, Mizalli, gonna get you funked!

All this talk of Nicki Minaj! Well done and congratulations to Jewellery designer Tatum Mizzalli! Having her designs worn by Minaj very recently in her trip to London, Funkybling is doing the damn thing! Check out some of the images I shot for their site when I came back from New York, the pieces have also been worn by Skepta, Will.i.am and featured in editorials for RWD Magazine.

Alisha White and House of Scarlett

Another twist of fate came from Alisha White, one of the contestants in Britain’s Next Top Model 2010, she also came 2nd place the same as Mel Rose from ANTM. I had been watching BNTM last year and really wanted to work with her! Just passing through Brixton one cold Winters evening, I saw her walking around with mother dearest close by side, initially I was going to just leave her, but I thought ‘No, I have to ask, the worst she can say is no’. At the time she mentioned how busy she was, but we exchanged numbers and hey presto, before you know it we were both shooting some images for jewellery designer Natasha at The House of Scarlet (http://thehouseofscarlet.blogspot.com). It was a long day, but we produced a brilliant range of images, special thanks to Holly on the make up and Johnella Francis for assistance.

Alisha is an absolute dream to work with, she knows her angles so well, amazing long legs, beautiful skin tone, youthful face and shares a vision, a true model from H to T (head to toe) as Tyra Banks would say.

That Bryce Aime reign just wont let up

Now one of 1883 magazine’s official photographers, they sent me out to take some portraits of well known fashion designer Bryce Aime, the creative mastermind designer behind Rihanna’s “So Hard” music video, just recently putting together an amazing show for fashion week 2011. I was actually invited to the show, but couldn’t get in due to overcrowding!!! Such a shame, but maybe next time. Bryce admitted that he didn’t like his picture taken, but I told him to just look away from the camera, pictures always seem more natural that way. We went through some poses, but nothing that seemed relevant, so he through up a salute in a Rihanna style fashion, referencing the military theme from her video and here was the result.

Essex is the only way

Cheeky girl band LOLA from “The Only Way Is Essex” also managed to fit me in before Christmas, set up by Above and Beyond Branding (thanks guys), it was cool getting to work with them, as being from Essex myself, I think we shared some common ground together. They were really nice girls and I hope to see them in the near future achieving some brilliant things, of course only in an ‘Essex way’ fashion ;). Much love to Natalie James for the styling.

2011 - What are you waiting for, bring it on!

Soon after Christmas I got to attend a private showing of the new film “Anuvahood Movie”, personally I thought this movie was great! Just what Great Britain needed and a breath of fresh air! I know gang culture, street politics and youth crime are bad things, but I feel we have had one too many movies that promote how negative all it is, nothing that shows a more ‘lighter’ side. The comedy touch by Adam Deacon was perfect, casting actors like himself, Ashley Walters, Richard Blackwood, Little Miss Jocelyn, Jaime Winstone and Ollie Barbieri, along with newcomers to the big screen like Mz. Bratt, Lethal B, Aisleyne from Big Brother and my boy Eddie Kadi!!! Courtesy of Flavour Magazine, we all put together a brand new shoot for the cast used in the monthly glossy earlier this year, as well as cover story!

Waited a while for this

FINALLY IT HAPPENED! I got a four page beauty story in January/February’s issue of Pride magazine, along with 6 other pages of features thanks to my girl Afua Adom, articles featured were Behind the scenes with Jamelia on her new branding shoot (set up by AAB), shot by high fashion photographer Joseph Sinclair and baking a cake with former top model Lorraine Pascale, now turned super chef! We got to eat the cakes too, they were tasty and healthy, mmm!

The beauty spread was styled by the very talented Katie Mcdowall, a new friend of mine who I was merrily up and down with at this years fashion week, she is a right go getter and you cant tell this girl no lol. I am sure this is just the first of many collaborations, now we are in talks of something quite special for a New York based magazine, roll on good times! Beautiful model Sherene Mcnichol posed for us, but to tell you the truth she didn’t really need to do much, I mean just look at her! Lol, A* work team, well done.

You gotta trust me, I’m a photographer

Sam Glenn is another new face shot by one of my assistants Mr. Joe McCormick, recently signed to Models1, he is truly on his way to a favourable future. I also managed to shoot with Sam just as he signed to Models1, they probably signed him up for the same reasons I wanted to work with him, his classical face, school boy charm and appeased nature. Sam took every trust in me as a photographer, something which is SO KEY to shooting with people as I always stress, you must trust your shooter! Another important thing which is quite personal to me as an artist, humble people are always so much more attractive than know-it-alls, arrogance can make you money, but that money can never buy you respect, SING IT KERI HILSON! “You can buy you a chain, but you cant buy respect” and that saying is so true, I don’t care if I have to sing it to people a million, billion, trillion times, my point of mind on the matter does not change one small bit, so this is a call out to all you BIG HEADS ON THE FLOOR, don’t do it.

Good times roll on! First exhibition, Samsung thank you, Tamara thank you, Drew thank you!

I am delighted to say some of my work will be exhibited at the Design Museum in London very soon! BIG THANKS TO TAMARA, DREW AND THE PEOPLE AT SAMSUNG. It will be the first time I am EVER getting my work exhibited, it is such a huge honour to get my work exhibited there for the first time, even bigger still to have been picked by Samsung as one of their ambassadors for the ‘Now’ project. They gave me a new phone to photograph my day-to-day antics and may I say the Samsung Wave II is one of the most brilliant camera phones I have ever used, the quality is so crisp! I took a lot of pictures, some actually quite personal and others more work related, also a big thank you to Carri Mundane of Cassette Playa, twitting one of my more naughty flicks lol. Also applying different filters created by Samsung in its editing menu, a very handy feature to have installed, its like quality photography meets Photoshop in one small touch screen phone. So that’s the end for now guys and dolls, I am going to try and update this thing on a regular basis, be sure to know I have some interesting posts comming up very soon!
